TYPE LOCATION: Miami County, Kansas; about 6 miles west and 4 miles north of Hillsdale; 280 feet north and 920 feet west of the southeast corner of section 27, T. 15 S., R. 22 E..
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to lithic contact with hard limestone bedrock ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The mollic epipedon ranges from 8 to 20 inches thick.
The A horizons have color value of 2 or 3, 4 or 5 dry; and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is silt loam or silty clay loam.
The Bt horizons has a hue of 7.5YR or 5YR; value of 3 to 5, 5 to 7 dry; and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is silty clay loam or silty clay. Clay content range from 35 to 50 percent clay.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Apperson, Kenoma, Parisian and Summit series. These soils are more than 40 inches to lithic contact. Also, Apperson, Kenoma, and Summit soils do not have hue as red as 7.5YR in the Bt horizon. Parisian soils are warmer in the soil temperature control section during the months of June through September.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Wagstaff soils are on nearly level to sloping uplands. The slopes are usually plane to convex. Slope gradients range from about 1 to 8 percent. Wagstaff soils formed in residuum from limestone. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 35 to 40 inches. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 55 to 58 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Bucyrus, Eram, Lula, Shidler, and Summit series. Bucyrus soils are on nose slopes and backslopes, and are greater than 60 inches to bedrock. Lula soils are on nose slopes and backslopes, and are greater than 40 inches to bedrock. Eram soils are on backslopes and are moderately deep to shale. Summit soils are on footslopes and lower back slopes, and are greater than 40 inches to shale. Shidler soils are on backslopes and are less than 20 inches deep to bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is slow to medium. Permeability is slow.
USE AND VEGETATION: Corn, sorghum, soybeans, and wheat are the principal crops. Some areas are used for hay and pasture. Native vegetation is tall grass prairie.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East Central and South central Kansas. This series if of moderate extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES PROPOSED: Miami County, Kansas, 1994.
REMARKS: Formerly these soils were mapped as Catoosa and Oska series.
Diagnostic Horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: Mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface to 14 inches; argillic horizon - the zone from 18 to 33 inches; lithic contact at 33 inches; udic moisture regime.
