TYPE LOCATION: Eureka County, Nevada; about 38 miles south of Carlin near Mineral Hill; about 500 feet south and 2,400 feet west of the approximate northeast corner of section 8, T. 26 N., R. 52 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture - Moist in winter and spring, dry in mid-June through October.
Soil temperature - 47 to 52 degrees F.
Depth to indurated duripan - 10 to 20 inches.
Control section - Texture: Silt loam or loam.
Percent clay: 18 to 25.
A horizon - Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist, the top 7 inches
when mixed is greater than 5.5 dry.
Chroma: 2 or 3.
Structure: Platy, subangular blocky or it is massive.
Reaction: Mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
Bk horizon - Value: 6 or 7 dry, 3 through 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline to strongly alkaline.
Effervescence: Strongly effervescent or violently effervescent. Lime is present as few to common filaments or it is disseminated.
Other features: Subhorizons containing up to 10 percent durinodes are present in some pedons.
Bqkm horizon - Value: 7 or 8 dry, 6 or 7 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3.
Laminar capping: Continuous, l to 6 millimeters thick. May be fractured in the upper part in some pedons.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Arritola, Chiara, Crooked, Frohman, Minveno, Nevoyer, Otoole, Peeko and Scoon series. Arritola soils have 25 to 35 percent clay in their particle-size control section and lack a Bk horizon above the duripan. Chiara soils have a Bw horizon and lack a Bk horizon above the duripan. Crooked soils are somewhat poorly drained and lack B horizons. Frohman and Minveno soils have a Bw horizon. Also, Frohman soils have less than 18 percent clay in their particle-size control section and Minveno soils have bedrock at a depth of 20 to 30 inches. Nevoyer soils have a lithic contact at a depth of 9 to 20 inches. Otoole soils are somewhat poorly drained, lack B horizons, have less than 18 percent clay in the particle-size control section and a high exchangeable sodium percentage. Peeko soils lack a Bk horizon. Scoon soils have a Bw horizon, average 6 to 12 percent clay in the particle-size control section and have a gravelly Bk horizon.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Tenvorrd soils are on fan piedmont remnants. They formed in alluvium from mixed rock sources with a component
of loess and volcanic ash. Slopes are 4 to 15 percent.
Elevations are 5,400 to 6,200 feet. The climate is cool, semiarid with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 8 to 10 inches; mean annual temperature is 47 to
50 degrees F., and the frost-free season is 95 to 120 days.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The
vegetation is mainly Utah juniper, big sagebrush, low sagebrush, Douglas rabbitbrush, Sandberg bluegrass and cheatgrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern Nevada. These soils are
not extensive.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Reno, Nevada
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Eureka County, Nevada, 1983.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Indurated duripan - The zone from about 19 to 40 inches (Bqkm horizon).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 10 to 19 inches
(part of the Bk horizon).
REMARKS:
The superactive cation exchange activity class was added in 03/2003 to the taxonomic classification by the National Soil Survey Center on request of the Reno MLRA office, without review of the soil series property data. The remainder of this document has not been updated.
