TYPICAL PEDON: Sogn silty clay loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)
A--0 to 23 centimeters (0 to 9 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) silty clay loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; moderate medium granular structure; hard, friable; few fragments of weathered limestone in lower 3 inches comprise less than 15 percent of the soil volume; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 51 centimeters (4 to 20 inches) thick)
R--23 centimeters (9 inches); level-bedded indurated limestone that has joints averaging about 46 centimeters (18 inches) apart and less than 1 centimeters (1/4 inch) wide, cracks are filled with dark colored soil.

Some pedons have an AC or C horizon with colors like the A horizon and texture of channery silt loam or channery silty clay loam.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Altezita,
Apache,
Bluemound,
Dalerose,
Hedville,
Purner,
Santana and
Venezia soil.
Altezita soils have less than 20 percent clay in the particle-size control section.
Apache soils: are dryer in the soil moisture control section and are derived from residuum weathered from basalt, small amounts of eolian material, and other volcanic debris
Bluemound soils formed in 25 to 51 centimeters (10 to 20 inches) of loess overlying
Sioux quartzite bedrock.
Dalerose soils: averages 5 to 18 percent clay in the particle size control section.
Hedville soils are underlain by sandstone and contain less than 18 percent clay.
Purmer soils: have hue of 2.5YR or 5YR.
Santana soils: contain fragments of granite in the series control section. Venezia soils: do not contain secondary carbonates, and receive winter precipitation.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: Residuum derived from Limestone bedrock
Landform: Uplands
Slopes: 0 to 20 percent
Mean annual temperature: 7 to 14 degrees C. (45 to 57 degrees F.)
Mean annual precipitation: 74 to 97 centimeters (29 to 38 inches)
Frost-free period: 165 to 190 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Clime,
Florence,
Irwin,
Kipson,
Labette,
Martin,
Oska,
Tully and
Vinland soils.
Clime, Florence, Irwin, Labette, Martin, Oska, and Tully soils have fine textures and are more than 51 centimeters (20 inches) to bedrock.
Florence, Irwin, Labette, and Oska soils are generally on slightly higher positions than the Sogn soils.
Clime, Kipson, Martin, Tully, and Vinland soils generally are on slopes below the Sogn soils.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: Somewhat excessive
Runoff: Medium or high
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: Moderately high
USE AND VEGETATION: Almost all areas are used for rangeland.
Native vegetation is midgrass prairie.
Sideoats grama, big bluestem, and little bluestem are dominant.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Mostly in eastern Kansas, and widely spaced small areas are in western Missouri, eastern Iowa and Nebraska, northwestern Illinois, southeastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and southwestern Wisconsin. The Sogn series is extensive.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Goodhue County, Minnesota; 1913.

date: 05/13/99 SAG
expanded slope range due to the Gage County, Nebraska update
Date: 5/00 JCR
Changed format of OSD to semi-tabular from narrative
Changed runoff from medium to rapid to medium to high
Added Soil Interpretation Record sand content to "Range In Characteristics" and frost-free period to Geographic setting.
Modified format by LRM in 3/2006 to include metric conversion and change permeability to saturated hydraulic conductivity.
