SAGANING SERIES

The Saganing series consists of deep poorly and very poorly drained soils formed in a thin layer of loamy material and the underlying sandy material on outwash plains and lake plains. These soils have moderately rapid permeability in the solum and rapid permeability in the underlying materials. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, frigid Aeric Endoaquepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Saganing sandy loam - on a 1 percent slope in a pasture area. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 8 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) sandy loam; weak medium granular structure; very friable; mildly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (7 to 9 inches thick)

B21g--8 to 13 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) sandy loam; weak thin platy structure; very friable; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

B22g--13 to 24 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) sandy loam; many medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and yellowish red (5YR 5/6) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; friable; mildly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick)

C--24 to 60 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) sand; common medium faint pale brown (10YR 6/3) mottles; single grained; loose; mildly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Arenac County, Michigan; 3 miles east of Arenac; 810 feet east and 525 feet north of the center of sec. 31, T. 19 N., R. 6 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 17 to 30 inches. The solum ranges from slightly acid to mildly alkaline. The C horizon ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline. Coarse fragments range from 0 to 3 percent by volume throughout the pedon.

The Ap horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. Uncultivated areas have an A1 horizon, 4 to 7 inches thick. It is mucky sandy loam or sandy loam.

The B21 horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 5 through 7, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam.

The B22 horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 through 7 and chroma of 2 through 4. Where chromas are 2 and it is mottled, greater than 40 percent of the matrix has chromas more than 2. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam or loamy sand. The 10- to 40-inch control section averages loamy sand.

The C horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 5 through 7, and chroma of 2 or 3.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Closely related are the Deford and Roscommon series. Deford and Roscommon soils lack sandy loam textures in the solum.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Saganing soils are on outwash plains and lake plains. Slope gradients range from 0 to 2 percent. Saganing soils formed in sandy loam or fine sandy loam overlying sand. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 28 to 32 inches, and mean annual temperature from 42 to 45 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Saganing soils are closely associated in a drainage sequence with the well drained Karlin soils. Deford and Roscommon soils are common associates.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained and very poorly drained. Runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderately rapid in the solum and rapid in the C horizon.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of these soils are in permanent pasture or forest. Some areas are under cultivation to legume-grass hay and small grains.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Lower Michigan. The series is of small extent.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Indianapolis, Indiana
