(3 to 4 inches thick)
Bk2--15 to 19 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) extremely gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; extremely hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; discontinuous indurated pan, 60 to 70 percent hardpan fragments; very strongly calcareous; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)
Bkm--19 to 23 inches; indurated carbonate hardpan that has a troweled surface and very pale brown (10YR 7/3) laminae 2 to 4mm thick. Subjacent layers are very pale brown (10YR 8/2) moist and are softer; very strongly calcareous; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4).
TYPE LOCATION: Juab County, Utah; near the north end of Dog Valley in the northwest 1/4 southwest 1/4 sec. 6, T. 12 S., R. 1 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 55 degrees F. The mean summer soil temperature ranges from 68 to 71 degrees F. The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts for 60 or more consecutive days following the summer solstice.
The mollic epipedon ranges from 7 to 15 inches thick. Depth to hardpan is 10 to 20 inches. The particle-size control section has 35 to 60 percent rock fragments.
The A horizon has value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist and chroma of 1 to 3 moist and dry. Reaction ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline.
The Bt horizon has value of 4 through 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist and chroma of 2 or 3 moist. It is very gravelly clay loam or very cobbly clay loam. Rock fragments range from 35 to 60 percent by volume. Reaction ranges from slightly alkaline to strongly alkaline.
The Bk horizon has value of 5 to 8 dry, 3 through 6 moist and chroma of 1 to 3 dry and moist. It is very cobbly or very gravelly clay loam or loam. This horizon is slightly alkaline to strongly alkaline and is moderately calcareous or strongly calcareous.
The Bkm horizon has value of 6 or 7 dry and 4 through 6 moist. It consists of one or more indurated layers.
COMPETING SERIES: This is the Rake (UT) series. Rake soils are dry in the soil moisture control section for 45 to 60 consecutive days.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils occur on old alluvial fans and hillsides at elevations of 5,000 to 6,600 feet. Slopes range from 2 to 40 percent. The soils formed in alluvium and colluvium from latite, welded breccia, andesite, rhyolite, quartzite, and limestone. Mean annual temperature ranges from 45 to 53 degrees F. The freeze-free period is 100 to 140 days. Average annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dagor, Donnardo, Mountainville, and Sumine soils and the competing Borvant, Povant, and Renol soils. Donnardo, Mountainville and Sumine soils lack petrocalcic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for rangeland and wildlife habitat. Potential vegetation is big sagebrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, peavine, and Indian ricegrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Inextensive; located in central Utah.
