NEW CAMBRIA SERIES

The New Cambria series consists of deep moderately well drained soils. These soils formed in calcareous clayey alluvium on terraces or flood plains.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Cumulic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: New Cambria silty clay is in a cultivated field. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 15 centimeters (0 to 6 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; moderate fine granular and blocky structure; very hard, firm; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--15 to 36 centimeters (6 to 14 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; strong fine granular and blocky structure; extremely hard, very firm; numerous fine roots and pores; scattered worm casts; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; diffuse smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is 23 to 38 centimeters (9 to 15 inches) thick)

Bw1--36 to 64 centimeters (14 to 25 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; moderate medium and fine blocky structure; extremely hard, very firm; numerous fine roots and pores; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; diffuse smooth boundary.

Bw2--64 to 81 centimeters (25 to 32 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; moderate medium blocky and subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, very firm; many fine roots and pores; scattered films and threads of lime; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline; diffuse smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the B2 horizon is 41 to 89 centimeters (16 to 35 inches) thick)

C1--81 to 109 centimeters (32 to 43 inches); gray (10YR 5/1) silty clay loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; many very-fine pores; scattered fine roots; many films and threads of lime; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 20 inches thick)

C2--109 to 152 centimeters (43 to 60 inches); light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silty clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; massive; very hard, firm; numerous films and threads of lime, many small soft lime accumulations; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Osborne County, Kansas; 11 kilometers (7 miles) SE of Osborne; 244 meters (800 feet) north and 61 meters (200 feet) east of the southwest corner of sec. 1, T. 8 S., R. 12 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Thickness of the solum: typically 71 to 91 centimeters (28 to 36 inches) but ranges from 64 to 114 (25 to 45 inches).
Free carbonates: typically less than 25 centimeters (10 inches) but ranges from 0 to 38 centimeters (0 to 15 inches)
Mollic epipedon: 51 to 102 centimeters (20 to 40 inches) or more
Reaction: commonly moderately alkaline throughout, but some pedons the upper 38 centimeters (15 inches) moderately alkaline or neutral

A horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 3 to 5, 2 or 3 moist
Chroma: 1 or 2
Texture: silty clay, clay, or silty clay loam

B2 horizon:
Colors like the A horizon
Texture: silty clay, clay, or silty clay loam
Clay content: 38 to 60 percent

C horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 4 to 6, 4 or 5 moist
Chroma: 1 to 3
Texture: silty clay loam or silty clay
Redoximorphic features: in some pedons faint mottles below depths of 102 centimeters (40 inches)

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Shay series.
Shay soils are in a drier climate.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landform: terraces or floodplains
Slope: commonly less than 1 percent, but the range is 0 to 2 percent
Parent material: calcareous alluvium with high silt and clay, and low sand
Mean annual temperature: 10 to 14 centimeters (50 to 57 degrees F.)
Mean annual precipitation: 56 to 76 centimeters (22 to 30 inches)
Thornthwaite annual P-E index: 36 to 54

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bogue, Detroit, Hord, Muir, Roxbury, and Timken series.
Bogue and Timken soils are on adjacent uplands and are underlain by clayey shales.
Detroit, Hord, Muir and Roxbury soils are on similar positions.
Hord, Muir, and Roxbury soils contain less clay.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: moderately well drained
Runoff: low
Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: moderately low

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated.
Winter wheat and sorghum are the principal crops.
Native vegetation is mid and tall grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central and north-central Kansas and possibly south-central Nebraska. The soils of this series are of moderate extent.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Saline County, Kansas, 1952.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Modified format by LRM in 8/2006 to include metric conversion and change permeability to saturated hydraulic conductivity.
