NAVINA SERIES

The Navina series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy alluvium of Pleistocene age. These nearly level to very gently sloping soils are on broad dissected terraces on uplands in the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is 33 inches. Mean annual temperature is 61 degrees F.

Bt2--24 to 31 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; thin nearly continuous clay film on faces of peds; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 16 inches thick)

Bt3--31 to 40 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) fine sandy loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable; thin nearly continuous clay film on faces of peds; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

BC--40 to 60 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) fine sandy loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; slightly hard, friable; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (12 to 34 inches)

C1--60 to 75 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 7/6) loamy fine sand, reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.

C2--75 to 80 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) fine sandy loam; strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Payne County, Oklahoma; about 9 miles west and 1 mile north of Perkins; 1,200 feet east and 300 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 27, T. 18 N., R. 1 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 40 to 80 inches. The mollic epipedon is less than 20 inches thick. Depth to bedrock is greater than 72 inches. Clay content of the textural control section ranges from 18 to 35 percent clay.

The A or Ap horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is silt loam, loam, or fine sandy loam. The Ap horizon ranges from 6 to 14 inches thick and the A horizon ranges from 5 to 14 inches thick. The average thickness of the A and Ap horizons is 14 inches. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to slightly alkaline.

The BA horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is loam, fine sandy loam or clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to slightly alkaline.

The Bt1 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 3 to 8. Texture is loam, sandy clay loam, fine sandy loam or clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to slightly alkaline.

The Bt2 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 3 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of brown, yellow, or red. Texture is clay loam, sandy clay loam, or fine sandy loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The Bt3 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of brown, yellow, or red. Texture is fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The BC horizon has hue or 5YR to 10YR, value of 5 to 8, and chroma of 4 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of red, brown, or yellow. Texture is loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.

The C horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 5 to 8, and chroma of 4 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of red, brown, or yellow. Texture is fine sandy loam, loamy fine sand, or loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Chickasha, Madge, Milan, Naron, Ravia, Stoneburg, Teller, and Zaneis series. Chickasha, Stoneburg, and Zaneis soils have a solum less than 60 inches thick over bedrock. Madge soils are dry for longer periods. Milan and Naron soils have more than 20 percent sand coarser than fine in the Bt horizon. Ravia soils have solum less than 60 inches thick and have more coarse fragments in the lower Bt horizon than the Navina soils. Teller soils have Bt horizons with hue of 5YR or redder.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Navina soils are on smooth broad nearly level to very gently sloping areas of dissected terraces of uplands in the Central Rolling Red Prairies. Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent, but are dominantly less than 2 percent. They formed in loamy alluvium of Pleistocene age. Mean Annual Precipitation: 26 to 38 inches. Mean Annual Temperature: 58 to 64 degrees F. Thornthwaite Annual P-E indices: 44 to 64. Frost free days: 200 to 230. Elevation: 900 to 1300 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Teller and Vanoss soils and the Dougherty, Konawa, and Pond Creek soils. Dougherty and Konawa soils lack a mollic epipedon and occur on landscapes that are slightly lower than the Navina soils. Pond Creek and Vanoss soils occur on landscapes that are slightly higher than the Navina soils. Pond Creek soils have a mollic epipedon more than 20 inches thick and have a fine-silty control section. Teller soils are on similar landscapes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is negligible on 0 to 1 percent slopes and low on 1 to 5 percent slopes; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly cultivated to small grains, grain sorghum and alfalfa. Some areas are used for improved pasture or rangeland. Native vegetation is tall prairie grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Prairies of Oklahoma. The series is not extensive.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Payne County, Oklahoma; 1983.

REMARKS: These soils were formerly included in the Vanoss series. Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 14 inches (A and BA horizons).
Argillic horizon - the zone from 14 inches to a depth of 40 inches (Bt horizons).
