LOVEDALE SERIES

The Lovedale series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in old alluvium. These soils are on treads and risers of stream terraces on uplands within the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Slope ranges from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual temperature is 58 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation is 28 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Udic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Lovedale fine sandy loam - on a 1 percent slope in cropland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 9 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/3) fine sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; hard, friable; common fine roots; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 18 inches thick)

BA--9 to 16 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 4/3) sandy clay loam, brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; common fine roots; few faint clay films on faces of peds; noneffervescent; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

Bt1--16 to 26 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) sandy clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; very hard, firm; few fine roots; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; noneffervescent; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (8 to 30 inches thick)

Bt2--26 to 40 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to weak coarse subangular blocky; very hard, firm; few fine roots; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; common fine rounded iron-manganese concretations; noneffervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 22 inches thick)

BC--40 to 55 inches; reddish yellow (5YR 6/6) sandy loam, yellowish red (5YR 5/6) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; hard, friable; noneffervescent; 1 percent gravel; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 18 inches thick)

C--55 to 80 inches; reddish yellow (5YR 7/6) fine sand, reddish yellow (5YR 6/6) moist; massive; loose, loose; very slightly effervescent; 1 percent gravel; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Woods County, Oklahoma. About .75 miles north of Dacoma; 180 feet north and 360 feet east of the southwest corner of sec. 1, T. 25 N., R. 13 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 30 to 60 inches. Free carbonates are lacking within depths of 34 inches. The thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 10 to 20 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR to 5YR, value 3 to 5 and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand. It is moderately acid to neutral. It contains 0 to 2 percent by volume of coarse fragments less than 76 mm in diameter.

The BA or AB horizon has hue of 10YR to 5YR, value 3 to 5 and 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy clay loam. It is moderately acid to neutral.

The Bt horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6 and 3 to 5 moist, and chroma of 3 to 6. It is sandy clay loam, loam, or sandy loam and has 18 to 27 percent clay and more than 20 percent sand coarser than fine. This horizon ranges from slightly acid to moderately alkaline. Gravel ranges from 0 to 10 percent by volume. Some pedons have a few redoximorphic concentration masses of yellow or brown in the below 40 inches.

The BC horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6 and 3 to 6 moist, and chroma of 3 to 6. It is sandy clay loam, sandy loam or fine sandy loam with 8 to 27 percent clay. This horizon ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline. Coarse fragments less than 76 mm in diameter range from 0 to 10 percent by volume.

The C horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 4 to 7 and 3 to 6 moist, and chroma of 4 to 8. It is coarse sandy loam, sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loamy sand or sand. This horizon ranges from slightly acid to moderately alkaline. Gravel ranges from 0 to 20 percent by volume.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Carman, Chickasha, Milan, Navina, Ravia, Schulenburg, Stoneburg, Teval, Teller and Waynoka series in the same family. Carman soils have redoximorphic features at depths less than 20 inches. Chickasha and Stoneburg soils have bedrock at depths less than 60 inches. Milan soils have more clay in the argillic horizon. Navina soils have an argillic horizon with yellower hue. Ravia soils contain more than 10 percent coarse fragments in the argillic horizon. Schulenburg soils have sola more than 60 inches thick. Teval soils have a lower clay activity class. Teller soils contain less than 20 percent material coarser than fine sand in the argillic horizon. Waynoka soils have a lithologic discontinuity within 60 inches of the soil surface.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lovedale soils are on nearly level to strongly sloping hill slopes. The slope gradient ranges from 0 to 12 percent. The soils formed in old alluvium. The mean annual temperature ranges from 57 to 62 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 26 to 38 inches. Thornthwaite Annual PE Index ranges from 44 to 64. Frost free days range from 190 to 220. Elevation is 1000 to 1500 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Devol, Eda, Milan, Waynoka, and Wisby soils. Waynoka and Wisby soils are on slightly lower positions, in addition Waynoka soils have lithologic discontinuities and Wisby soils have gravelly substratum. The Devol and Eda soils have a less clayey subsoil and are on steeper slopes. Milan soils are on less sloping landscapes and have more clay in the argillic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is low or medium. Permeability is moderate.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cultivated. The principal crops are winter wheat and grain sorghum. Native vegetation is tall grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA-80A) of Oklahoma and Kansas. The soil is moderately extensive.
