COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Bon,
Frazwell,
Lynx,
Manzano,
Maskell,
Shanta,
Mauricanyon,
Merrick, St Onge,
Pack and
Umbarg soils.
Bon and
St. Onge soils have a lower mean annual temperature. Frazwell, Lynx, Manzano, Maskell, Mauricanyon, Merrick, and Pack soils lack free carbonates above a depth of 15 inches.
Shanta soils receive less precipitation.
Umbarg soils occur at higher elevations have a mean annual temperature of less than 54 degrees.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landform: flood plains
Slope: 0 to 2 percent
Parent material: calcareous loamy alluvium
Mean annual temperature: 11 to 14 degrees C. (51 to 57 degrees F.)
Mean annual precipitation: 43 to 76 centimeters (17 to 30 inches)
Thornthwaites Annual P-E Index: 28 to 54.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Bridgeport,
Bridget,
Cass,
Detroit,
Hobbs,
Hord,
McCook,
Roxbury, and
Uly soils.
Bridgeport, Bridget, Cass, Detroit, and Hord soils are on slightly higher positions.
Bridget soils are coarse-silty.
Cass soils are coarse-loamy.
Detroit soils have a fine textured argillic horizon.
Hobbs, McCook, and Roxbury soils are on similar topographic positions as Humbarger soils.
Uly soils are fine-silty and are on adjacent uplands.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: well drained and moderately well drained
Runoff: low
Saturated Hydraulic conductivity: moderately high or high
Flooding: occasionally
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Humbarger soils are cultivated.
The principal crops are corn, grain sorghum, or wheat.
Native vegetation is tall grasses with scattered deciduous trees along the stream channel.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central and western Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southwestern Colorado, and areas of Texas. The soils of this series are of moderate extent; about 60,000 acres.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Saline County, Kansas, 1952.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon: 51 to 122 centimeters (20 to 48 inches)
Modified format by LRM in 10/2006 to include metric conversion and change permeability to saturated hydraulic conductivity.
