TYPE LOCATION: Garfield, County, Utah; northeast of Woodchuck enclosure; NE 1/4 sec. 28, T. 31 S., R. 2 1/2 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is about 38 to 44 degrees F. and the mean summer soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is about 50 to 57 degrees F.
The mollic epipedon is 8 to 15 inches thick.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. Reaction is slightly acid.
The Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist, and chroma of 3 or 4. It ranges from gravelly and cobbly sandy clay loam to very gravelly and very cobbly sandy loam and clay loam and averages 35 to 60 percent rock fragments.
The Bk horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 to 8 dry, 4 to 7 moist, and chroma of 2 to 6. It ranges from very gravelly and very or extremely cobbly sandy loam to very cobbly and very gravelly loam. Common to many large distinct white (10YR 8/2) soft to weakly cemented fragments of carbonates are present.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Blaine (MT), Bowen (CO), Buena Vista (CO), Chamberlain (T ID), Elwood (UT), Ess (AZ), Ezbin (T ID), Fornor (WY), Forsey (UT), Fourme (ID), Fourmile (CO), Geertsen (UT), Hodden (CO), Latigo (T ID), Libeg (MT), Nathale (WY), Nathrop (CO), Norriston (CO), Nurkey (T ID), Packer (NV), Parkview (CO), Quander (CO), Sawfork (CO), Sedgway (ID), Tahquats (ID), Teeler (WY), Thiel (MT), Winada (NV), Woodhall (CO) and Zeebar (T ID) series. Blaine, Bowen, Buena Vista, Elwood, Nathale, Nathrop, Parkview, Winada and Woodhall soils have bedrock at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Chamberlain soils have silica coating on the rock fragments. Ess, Ezbin, Fornor, Forsey, Fourme, Fourmile, Geertsen, Libeg, Norriston, Packer, Quander, Sedgway, Tahquats, and Zeebar soils do not have a calcic horizon. Hodden and Sawfork soils are dry for significantly more days in the moisture control section, and receive less than 16 inches of total precipitation. Latigo soils are neutral in the surface horizon and have silt loam textures in the Bt horizon. Nurkey soils have mean summer soil temperatures of 46 to 50 degrees F. Teeler soils have bedrock at 40 to 60 inches. Thiel soils have coarse sand and gravel at depths of 20 to 40 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hoodle soils are on dissected pediments veneered with volcanic alluvium. Elevations range from 6,500 to 10,000 feet. The soils are on moderately sloping convex long narrow ridge tops. Slope gradients are 0 to 60 percent. The average annual precipitation is 18 to 25 inches and the freeze-free period ranges from 50 to 65 days. The mean annual temperature is 36 to 44 degrees F. and the average summer temperature is 50 to 57 degrees F.
