FLEISCHMANN SERIES

The Fleischmann series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils on terraces. They formed in mixed alluvium. The mean annual precipitation is about l0 inches and the mean annual temperature is 48 degrees F. Slopes are 2 to l5 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Argidic Durixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Fleishmann gravelly clay loam, irrigated pasture. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Al--0 to 4 inches; grayish brown (l0YR 5/2) gravelly clay loam, dark brown (l0YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, firm, sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine through medium roots; many very fine through medium pores; l5 percent pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.3); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)

Bl--4 to l0 inches; brown (l0YR 5/3) heavy clay loam, dark brown (l0YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium angular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine through medium roots; common fine through medium pores; common thin clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 9 inches thick)

B2t--l0 to 20 inches; yellowish brown (l0YR 5/4) clay, dark yellowish brown (l0YR 4/4) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure; very hard, very firm, sticky and plastic; very few roots; very few pores; many moderately thick clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to l5 inches thick)

Clsim--20 to 43 inches; very pale brown (l0YR 7/3) strongly cemented duripan, with some weakly cemented strata; pale brown (l0YR 6/3) moist; massive; very hard, very firm; few discontinuous indurated laminae; slightly effervescent in spots; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (l0 to 25 inches thick)

IIC2--43 to 60 inches; light yellowish brown (l0YR 6/4) highly variable semiconsolidated alluvium and weathered softly consolidated conglomerate with apparent texture of sandy loam to very gravelly sandy clay loam, yellowish brown (l0YR 5/4) moist; massive; very hard, firm but very firm in about 25 percent of the area; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Washoe County, Nevada; approximately 2,500 feet south and 300 feet east of the northwest corner of section 32, T. 20 N., R. 20 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum and depth to the strongly cemented duripan is 20 to 30 inches. The mollic epipedon is 8 to l2 inches thick. The mean annual soil temperature is 50 to 53 degrees F. These soils are usually dry but are moist in the later winter or spring.

The A horizon has value of 4 or 5 dry, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is commonly slightly acid or neutral but is medium acid in some pedons.

The Bl horizon has value of 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It has angular blocky or prismatic structure. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The B2t horizon commonly has hue of l0YR but is 7.5YR in some pedons. Value is 4 or 5 dry and chroma is 3 or 4. It has weak through strong prismatic structure. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The IIC horizon is unconformable variable alluvial deposits that have weakly silica-cemented lamellae in some pedons. These deposits are often very gravelly.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Barnard, Seval, and Xerta series. Barnard and Seval soils have an indurated duripan with continuous laminar silica capping. Xerta soils have bedrock at 20 to 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Fleischmann soils are on terraces at elevations of 4,300 to 5,200 feet. Slopes are 2 to l5 percent. They formed in mixed alluvium. The mean annual precipitation is 8 to l2 inches; mean annual temperature is 47 to 50 degrees F; and the frost-free season is about 90 to ll0 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Manogue, Orr, and Reno soils. Manogue soils lack a mollic epipedon, an argillic horizon, and a duripan. Orr soils have a fine-loamy control section and lack a duripan. Reno soils lack a mollic epipedon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; slow or medium runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Pasture and urban development.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Nevada. The series is of limited extent.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Reno, Nevada

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Washoe County, South Part, Nevada, l980.
