ENTERPRISE SERIES

The Enterprise series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in loamy eolian sediments. These soils are on nearly level to moderately steep plains on terrace pediments in the Central Rolling Red Plains (MLRA 78B, 78C). Slopes range from 0 to 20 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Haplustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Enterprise very fine sandy loam--cropland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 10 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very fine sandy loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; structureless; soft, very friable; common fine roots; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)

A--10 to 18 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very fine sandy loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky and granular structure; soft, very friable; few fine roots; few fine pores; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (7 to 36 inches thick)

Bk--18 to 40 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very fine sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable; few fine roots; few fine pores; common white threads and films of calcium carbonate; violently effervescent, moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (12 to 36 inches thick)

BC--40 to 60 inches; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) very fine sandy loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable; few fine pores; few faint films and threads of calcium carbonate in upper part; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Cottle County, Texas; from the village of Chalk; 1.9 miles west on Farm Road 1278; 0.8 mile north on county road; 50 feet west in a cultivated field.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to carbonates ranges from 0 to 30 inches. Texture is very fine sandy loam, loam, or silt loam throughout.

The A horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. Reaction is neutral to moderately alkaline.

The Bk and BC horizons have hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 3 to 8. Texture is very fine sandy loam, loam or silt loam. Reaction is slightly or moderately alkaline. In some pedons soft sandstone occurs at depths of 50 to 80 inches.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Deepwood (OK), Gotebo (OK), and Woodward (OK) series. Similar soils are the Apalo, Dill, Hardeman, Minco, Noble, Quinlan, Reinach and Spade series. Deepwood soils derived from materials weathered from Permian age sediments. Gotebo and Woodward soils have soft bedrock at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. Apalo soils are not calcareous in the control section. Dill, Hardeman, Noble, and Spade soils have a coarse-loamy particle-size control section. Minco and Reinach soils have a mollic epipedon. Quinlan soils are less than 20 inches deep to soft sandstone.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Enterprise soils are on plains on terrace pediments of uplands having convex to plane surfaces. Slope gradients are mostly 0 to 8 percent, but range up to 20 percent. The soil formed in as much as 20 feet of medium textured eolian material which has blown from the channels of nearby streams. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 20 to 28 inches, and mean annual temperature ranges from 59 to 65 degrees F. Frost free days range from 200 to 240 days and elevation ranges from 1,000 to 2,100 feet. Thornthwaite annual P-E indices range from 32 to 44.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Hardeman, Jester, Miles, and Springer series. Hardeman soils have a coarse-loamy particle-size control section and are on similar landscapes. Miles and Springer soils have a argillic horizon and are on slightly higher landscapes. Jester soils have textures coarser than loamy very fine sand throughout and are on slightly lower landscapes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderately rapid. Runoff is negligible on slopes less than 1 percent, very low on 1 to 5 percent slopes, and low on 5 to 20 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mostly for cropland; sorghum, cotton, and wheat are the main crops. Native vegetation is mainly grama and bluestem grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Plains (MLRA 78B, 78C) and Rolling Limestone Prairie (MLRA 78D) of Texas and Oklahoma adjacent to large streams. The soil is extensive.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Wichita County, Texas; 1924.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - 0 to 18 inches. (Ap and A horizons)
