RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 25 to 45 inches but is predominantly 32 to 40 inches. This corresponds to the depth to carbonates. Gravel and cobble content in the solum ranges from 0 to 15 percent. The mean annual soil temperature is estimated to range from 47 to 52 degrees F.
The Ap horizon has 10YR hue, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sandy loam or loamy sand. The reaction is slightly acid or neutral. Pedons which have not been plowed have a black (10YR 2/1) A1 horizon, 4 to 7 inches thick.
The Bg horizons have a hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5, 6 or 7 and chroma of 1 or 2. Mottles are faint to distinct. Textures are commonly loamy sand in the B21g but ranges to sandy loam. The texture in the B22g and B23g ranges from sandy loam to loamy sand and have strata of sandy or fine sand. Structure is weak to moderate, fine to coarse, and granular or subangular blocky. The reaction ranges from neutral to medium acid in the B21g and B22g and from slightly acid to mildly alkaline in the B23g.
The C horizon has a hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5, 6 or 7 and chroma of 1 or 2. Mottles are faint to distinct. Texture is predominantly loamy sand with strata of sand, fine sand and sandy loam occurring in layers up to 6 inches in thickness.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Edmore soils occur on level to depressional areas on moraines and till plains of Wisconsinan Age. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. The climate is continental. The mean annual temperature ranges from about 45 to 51 degrees F. The annual precipitation ranges from about 28 to 31 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the well drained Spinks soils and the somewhat poorly drained Thetford soils. The somewhat poorly drained Pipestone and the poorly drained Kingsville and Granby soils are also common sandy associates. The somewhat finer textured Barry soils occur near Edmore in some areas.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly or very poorly drained. Permeability is moderate or moderately rapid. Runoff is slow.
USE AND VEGETATION: Largely wooded areas with elm, ash and red maple the dominant species. Some areas are cleared and used for pasture. A few areas are drained and used for production of small grain and corn.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan. The series is of small extent. Approximately 4,300 acres have been correlated in Michigan.
