DELA SERIES

The Dela series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in loamy and sandy alluvium. These nearly level to very gently sloping soils are on forested flood plains of the Western Coastal Plains (MLRA 133B), Ouachita Mountains (MLRA 119), and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges (MLRA 118). Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual air temperature is 63 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 48 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, siliceous, active, nonacid, thermic Typic Udifluvents

TYPICAL PEDON: Dela fine sandy loam--cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 6 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sandy loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

A1--6 to 12 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 16 inches thick)

C1--12 to 22 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; structureless; friable; thin strata of brown (10YR 4/3) fine sandy loam; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 34 inches thick)

C2--22 to 36 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) fine sandy loam; few medium distinct dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) mottles; structureless; friable; thin strata of pale brown (10YR 6/3) fine sandy loam; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (13 to 31 inches thick)

C3--36 to 55 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loamy fine sand; few medium faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) redoximorphic depletion masses; structureless; friable; thin strata of brown (7.5YR 5/4) fine sandy loam; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 24 inches thick)

C4--55 to 72 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) loamy fine sand; common medium distinct dark brown (10YR 3/3) and few medium distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2) mottles; structureless; friable; strata of brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) fine sandy loam; strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Pushmataha County, Oklahoma; about 8 miles southeast of Antlers; 1,360 feet west and 200 feet north of the southeast corner of sec. 14, T. 4 S., R. 17 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: All horizons range from neutral to strongly acid.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is fine sandy loam, sandy loam, or loamy fine sand.

The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4, 5, or 6, and chroma of 2, 3, 4, or 6. Horizons with chroma 2 or less occur at depths of 40 to 60 inches. Redoximorphic concentrations and depletions are in shades of brown, yellow, or gray. The 10 to 40 inch control section is fine sandy loam, sandy loam, or loam and is stratified with thin strata of finer or coarser material. Below the 40 inch depth the texture is fine sandy loam, sandy loam, or loamy fine sand and is stratified with thin strata of other textures. Buried horizons below the 40 inch depth, with clay content ranging from 18 to 35 percent, are present in some pedons.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Soils in closely related families include the Madill and Toccoa series with mixed mineralogy, the Robinsonville series with mixed mineralogy and superactive CEC activity class, and the Kaintuck series with mesic temperature regime and superactive CEC activity class.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dela soils are on nearly level to very gently sloping forested flood plains of the Western Coastal Plains, Ouachita Mountains, and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges. They formed in loamy and sandy alluvium. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 56 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 60 degrees to 64 degrees F. Thornthwaite annual P-E indices are greater than 64.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Cupco, Guyton, Neff, Pushmataha and Rexor series. Pushmataha soils are on similar landscapes, but further from the stream channel. Cupco, Guyton, Neff, and Rexor soils have B2t horizons and fine-silty control sections. Cupco, Guyton, Neff, and Rexor soils occur on similar landscapes, but are further from the stream channel.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Dela soils are moderately well drained. Runoff is low and permeability is moderately rapid. These soils are subject to flooding for very brief periods mainly during the winter and spring months. An apparent water table ranges from 3 to 5 feet of the surface during the winter and spring months.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are used for tame pasture or woodland. Some areas are cultivated to grain sorghum, soybeans, and wheat. Native vegetation is southern red oak, green ash, hickory, sweetgum, eastern cottonwood, and shortleaf pine.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Flood plains of Ouachita Mountains and the Arkansas Valley and Ridges of Oklahoma and Arkansas. The series is of minor extent.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Little Rock, Arkansas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Haskell County, Oklahoma; 1972.
