TYPE LOCATION: Yakima County, Washington; 1,000 feet east and 1,200 feet south of the northwest corner of section 29, T. 14 N., R. 16 E., W.M.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 13 to 20 inches. Depth to the lithic contact is 20 to 40 inches. The mollic epipedon is 10 to 15 inches thick. The average annual soil temperature ranges from 47 degrees to 51 degrees F. These soils are usually moist but are dry in all parts between depths of 8 and 24 inches for 60 to 75 consecutive days during summer and autumn. The particle-size control section averages 18 to 25 percent clay and 35 to 75 percent coarse fragments. Base saturation is more than 75 percent.
The A horizon has hue of 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 through 5 dry, 1 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 or 3. It has moderate blocky or granular structure. Rock fragments range from 10 to 25 percent. It is very cobbly loam or very stony loam.
The Bw horizon has hue of 5YR, 7.5YR, or 10YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 through 3 moist and dry. It is very gravelly loam or very gravelly silt loam.
The C horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry. It is loam, silt loam, or sandy clay loam and has 60 to 90 percent coarse fragments. Some pedons lack a C horizon.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Benco, Kilburn, Oldsferry, Storer, and Wynhoff series. All these soils, except Oldsferry, Storer, and Wynhoff, lack bedrock within depths of 60 inches. Oldsferry soils have 10YR hues throughout the profile and are dominated by shale fragments in the coarse fragment fraction. Storer soils have bedrock at 40 to 60 inches and have 10YR hues throughout the profile. Wynhoff soils have 8 to 15 percent clay in the particle size control section and have hues of 10YR throughout the profile.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clint soils are on ridge and canyon side slopes. Slopes are 0 to 75 percent. The soils formed in loess and basalt colluvium. Elevations are 2,000 to 3,300 feet. The soils are in a climate with warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. The average annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches. The average January temperature is 27 degrees F., the average July temperature is 69 degrees F., and the average annual temperature is 47 to 49 degrees F. The frost-free season is 110 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Camaspatch, McDaniel, Rock Creek, Rockly, and Taneum series. Camaspatch soils are on sideslopes, have a lithic contact at less than 20 inches, and have greater than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section. McDaniel soils are on hillsides and canyon walls and lack bedrock within a depth of 40 inches. Rock Creek and Rockly soils are on ridgetops and plateaus and have a lithic contact at a depth of less than 20 inches. Taneum soils are on uplands and have less than 15 percent coarse fragments in the particle-size control section and lack bedrock within a depth of 40 inches.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to medium runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Range and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is bunchgrass and sagebrush.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South-central Washington. Series is of small extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Yakima County, Washington, 1979.
