Cr--33 to 60 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) consolidated calcareous clay shales.
TYPE LOCATION: Chase County, Kansas; about 4 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; 820 feet west and 1,800 feet south of the northeast corner, section 31, T. 18 S., R. 8 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Mollic epipedon: 7 to 20 inches
Depth to shale: 20 to 40 inches
Depth to free carbonates: 0 to 10 inches
Reaction: slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline throughout, however a few pedons are neutral to a depth of 10 inches.
A horizon:
Hue: of 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 3 to 5 and 2 or 3 moist
Chroma: 1 or 2
Texture: silty clay or silty clay loam. The range includes stony and very stony surface phases. Limestone fragments on the surface, 3 inches to 2 feet in diameter, range from .01 to 3 percent by volume.
Bw horizon:
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 4 to 7 and 3 to 6 moist
Chroma: 1 to 4
Texture: silty clay, clay, or silty clay loam. Shale fragments, less than 3 inches in diameter, range from 0 to 10 percent.
C horizon:
Hue: 10YR, 2.5Y, or 5Y
Value: 5 to 7 and 4 to 6 moist
Chroma: 2 to 4
Texture: silty clay, clay, or silty clay loam. Shale fragments are less than 35 percent by volume
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clime soils are on uplands that have a plane or convex surface. The slope gradient ranges from 1 to 60 percent. The soils formed in residuum from calcareous clayey shale. Mean annual temperature ranges from 54 to 57 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 29 to 35 inches. Thornthwaites Annual PE Index ranges from 48 to 60.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Benfield, Irwin, Kipson, Labette, Martin, Sogn, and Tully soils. Benfield soils occur in a similar position. They have an argillic horizon and the soil mass is not calcareous within 28 inches. Irwin and Labette soils are on divides above Clime soils. They have an argillic horizon. Kipson soils are shallow over shale and are on similar position. Martin and Tully soils have an argillic horizon and are on foot slopes. Sogn soils are shallow over limestone and generally occupy less sloping areas.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is medium to very high. Permeability is slow.
USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly in native grass. Vegetation is mixed tall and mid grasses. Some areas are cultivated. The principal crops are winter wheat and grain sorghum.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Largely confined to the Bluestem Hills of east-central Kansas. The series is extensive, with about 500,000 acres.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Butler County, Kansas, 1970.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon:the zone from the surface of the soils to a depth of 18 inches (A and Bw horizon).
07/2003 WAW Change to semi-tabular format, changed runoff from rapid to very high. Updated cation exchange activity class to active based on laboratory data collected near the type location.
ADDITIONAL DATA: A pedon was sampled from the general area as the typical pedon described here for analysis. The data is listed under NSSL Numbers 79P1655 - 79P1658 (pedon 79KS017001).
