CLARESON SERIES

The Clareson series consists of moderately deep over limestone, well drained, moderately slowly or slowly permeable soils that formed in residuum weathered from limestone. These soils are on uplands.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey-skeletal, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Argiudolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Clareson silty clay loam - on a 2 percent convex slope under native grass. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 20 centimeters (0 to 8 inches); very dark brown (l0YR 2/2) silty clay loam; dark grayish brown (l0YR 4/2) dry; moderate medium granular structure; hard, friable; many fine roots; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (15 to 30 centimeters (6 to l2 inches thick)

BA--20 to 36 centimeters (8 to l4 inches); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) silty clay loam, brown (7.5YR 4/2) dry; moderate medium granular structure; hard, firm; common fine roots; few small fragments of limestone; moderately acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 20 centimeters (0 to 8 inches thick)

Bt--36 to 64 centimeters (l4 to 25 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) very flaggy silty clay, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; few fine roots; flaggy and smaller limestone fragments comprise 45 percent of the volume; few small black concretions; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary. (15 to 43 centimeters (6 to l7 inches thick)

BC--64 to 76 centimeters (25 to 30 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) very flaggy silty clay, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) dry; common medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) mottles; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; flaggy limestone fragments comprise 55 percent of volume; common small black concretions; neutral; abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 31 centimeters (0 to l2 inches thick)

R--76 centimeters (30 inches); hard limestone bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Crawford County, Kansas; 4 miles west and l 3/4 miles south of Arcadia; 335 meters (l,l00 feet north) and 45 meters (l50 feet) east of the southwest corner of sec. 8, T. 28 S., R. 25 E.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: formed in material weathered from hard limestone that is jointed and thinly bedded
Landform: uplands that have a convex surface.
Slope: 0 to l5 percent
Mean annual temperature varies from 14 to 17 degrees C (57 to 63 degrees F)
Mean annual precipitation varies from 89 to 114 centimeters (35 to 45 inches)

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Catoosa, Lula, Ringo, Sogn, Summit, and Zaar soils.
Catoosa, Lula, and Sogn are on similar topographic positions as Clareson soils.
Ringo, Summit, and Zaar soils contain less than l5 percent coarse fragments and are below Clareson soils in the landscape.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: Well drained
Saturated hydraulic conductivity: moderately low or low
Runoff: high to very high.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly in native grass pasture
Most common grasses are big bluestem, little bluestem, switchgrass, indiangrass, and sideoats grama.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and northwest Arkansas
The soils of this series are of moderate extent
