CISCO SERIES

The Cisco series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy and sandy materials. These soils are on gently sloping to moderately sloping uplands. Slopes range from 1 to 8 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, siliceous, superactive, thermic Typic Haplustalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Cisco loamy fine sand--cultivated.
(Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 10 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) loamy fine sand, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable; few fine roots; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (5 to 18 inches thick)

Bt1--10 to 14 inches; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) sandy clay loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; few fine roots; few medium pores; few thin clay films on faces of peds; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (4 to 20 inches thick)

Bt2--14 to 30 inches; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) sandy clay loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; few fine roots; few fine pores; few thin clay films on faces of peds; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (12 to 20 inches thick)

BCt--30 to 50 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) sandy clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; few medium faint brown (7.5YR 4/4) mottles and few fine faint yellowish red mottles; very hard, firm; few fine roots; few fine pores, few thin clay films on faces of peds; few fine brown concretions; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 30 inches thick)

BCk--50 to 70 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) fine sandy loam, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) moist; common fine yellowish brown mottles; weak coarse prismatic structure; slightly hard, friable; common fine calcium carbonate concretions; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Eastland County, Texas; from the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and Texas Highway 36 in Rising Star, 6.6 miles west on Texas Highway 36; south on county road 0.3 mile and 109 yards west in field.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 60 to 80 inches. Within a depth of 60 inches there is more than 20 percent reduction in clay content from the maximum. Secondary carbonates are at depths ranging from 36 to 60 inches. Some pedons have a few rounded siliceous pebbles.

The A horizon has hue 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR, value 4 to 6 and chroma 2 to 4. Texture is loamy sand, loamy fine sand,or fine sandy loam. The reaction is slightly acid or neutral.

The Bt horizons have color with hue 2.5YR or 5YR, value 4 or 5 and chroma 4 to 8. Texture is sandy clay loam or clay loam with clay content ranging from about 20 to 35 percent. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to slightly alkaline.

The BCt horizon has color with hue of 2.5YR, 5YR, or 7.5YR, value 4 to 7 and chroma 4 to 8. Yellowish brown, brown, and red mottles range from few to many, or may be absent in some pedons. Texture is sandy clay loam or fine sandy loam with clay content ranging from 10 to 22 percent. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to moderately alkaline.

The BCk horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value 5 to 8 and chroma 2 to 8. Mottles are in shades of yellow, brown and red. Calcium carbonate concretions, film threads and soft masses range from 1 to 5 percent by volume. Texture is sandy clay loam or fine sandy loam interbedded with weakly cemented sandstone. Reaction is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.

Some pedons have C horizons of loamy fine sand, fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam or weakly cemented sands. Color is in shades of yellow, brown or red.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Campair in the same family and the similar Bastsil, Gholson, Honeycreek, Lavender, May, Menard, Personville and Rochelle series. Campair soils are moderately deep over hard sandstone. Bastsil soils have a clay distribution that does not decrease from the maximum by as much as 20 percent of the maximum within a depth of 60 inches and are in slightly moisture climates. Gholson, Lavender, May and Personville soils are in slightly moisture climates. Honeycreek, Menard and Rochelle soils have mixed mineralogy.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on gently sloping to moderately sloping uplands with concave and convex surfaces. Slope gradients range from 1 to 8 percent. The soil formed in sandy and loamy Cretaceous materials. Mean annual temperature ranges from 64 to 67 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. Frost free days range from 220 to 240 days and elevation ranges from 1000 to 1700 feet above sea level. Thornthwaite P-E indices range from 38 to 50.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing May, Menard, and the Chaney, Hext, Nimrod, Pedernales and Wise series. Chaney and Nimrod have gray mottles in the Bt horizons and in addition Nimrod soils have arenic surface layers. Hext and Wise soils have carbonates in the upper part of the solum. Pedernales soils have more than 35 percent clay in the control section. Hext, May, Nimrod, Pedernales and Wise soils are slightly higher in the landscape. Chaney soils are on slightly lower positions in the landscape. Menard soils are on the same landscape positions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is very low on 1 to 3 percent slopes, low on 3 to 5 percent slopes and medium on 5 to 8 percent slopes. moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly cultivated; principal crops are peanuts and grain sorghum. Native vegetation consists of a dense cover of post oak trees, with grassy understory of little bluestem, sideoats grama, and silver bluestem.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Cross Timbers Area or north central Texas and possibly central Oklahoma. The series is of large extent.

MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas
