TYPE LOCATION: Carter County, Oklahoma; about 3 miles west of Healdton; 1,980 feet west and 1,980 feet north of the southeast corner of sec. 6, T. 4 S., R. 3 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to weakly cemented sandstone bedrock ranges from 40 to 60 inches. The upper 20 inches of the Bt horizon contains 18 to 30 percent clay.
The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is loam or fine sandy loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.
Some pedons have BA horizons 3 to 16 inches thick. Where present, the BA horizon has color and reaction like the A horizon, but includes values and chromas that are 1 or 2 units higher. The BA horizon has texture of loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam.
The Bt1 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 2 to 6. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of red or brown. Texture is loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.
The Bt2 horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 4 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of red, brown, or yellow. Texture is loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to moderately alkaline.
The BC horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 8. Some pedons have redoximorphic concentrations in shades of red, brown, or yellow. Texture is loam or sandy clay loam. Coarse fragments of sandstone less than 3 inches in diameter ranges from 1 to 5 percent by volume. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to moderately alkaline.
The Cr layer is grayish, brownish, or yellowish weakly cemented sandstone in most pedons. The sandstone is typically noncalcareous, but minor amounts are calcareous. Some pedons are underlain with unconforming reddish or brownish clay or clay loam that has rock structure and seams of sandstone or siltstone.
COMPETING SERIES: These are Madge, Milan, Naron, Navina, Ravia, Shellabarger, Stoneburg, Teller, and Zaneis series in the same family. Madge soils have a solum more than 60 inches thick and do not have bedrock. Milan, Naron, Navina, Shellabarger, and Teller soils do not have bedrock within 60 inches of the surface. Ravia soils have 10 to 30 percent coarse fragments in the B horizon. Stoneburg soils have a solum less than 40 inches thick. Zaneis soils have hues of 5YR or redder in the Bt horizon.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Chickasha soils are on nearly level to sloping ridgetops and side slopes of uplands in the Central Rolling Red Prairies. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. These soils formed in material weathered from sandstone of Permian age. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 26 to 38 inches. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 57 to 64 degrees F. Thornthwaite annual P-E indices range from 44 to 64. Frost free days range from 200 to 230. Elevation ranges from 700 to 1300 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Coyle, Grant, Mulhall, and Zaneis series and Doolin, Grainola, Huska, Ironmound, Lucien and Renfrow series. Coyle, Doolin, Huska and Grant soils are usually on landscapes above the Chickasha soils. In addition, Doolin and Huska soils have a fine control section and have a natric horizon. Grainola and Renfrow soils are on landscapes below the Chickasha soils. In addition, these soils have a fine control section. Lucien, Mulhall, and Zaneis soils are on similar landscapes as the Chickasha soils. In addition, Lucien soils have a solum less than 20 inches thick over sandstone bedrock and lack an argillic horizon. Ironmound soils lack a mollic epipedon and have solum less than 20 inches over sandstone bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; runoff is negligible on 0 to 1 percent slopes, low on 1 to 5 percent slopes and medium on 5 to 8 percent slopes; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Mainly cultivated to small grains, grain sorghum, cotton, and improved pasture. Some areas are used for rangeland. Native vegetation is tallgrass prairie.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Prairies of Oklahoma and Texas. The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Washita County, Oklahoma; 1939.
REMARKS: Soil Interpretative Record - OK0031
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic Epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 12 inches (the A horizon)
Argillic horizon - the zone from 12 to 44 inches (the Bt horizon)
