RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture - Usually dry; moist in winter and spring, dry late May through November.
Soil temperature - 47 to 53 degrees F.
Depth to Durinodes - 10 to 30 inches.
Other features - Iron mottles and gypsum: Faint or distinct iron mottles and gypsum segregations are lacking in horizons below a depth of 10 inches in some pedons.
Control section - Clay content: 10 to 15 percent.
Rock fragments: 0 to 5 percent pebbles.
Ck horizons are above the Cq horizons in some pedons.
Salt and sodium: These soils are normally strongly salt and sodium affected throughout the profile, but some pedons are only moderately or slightly affected in the upper horizons.
A horizon - Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline to very strongly alkaline.
Effervescence: Slightly, strongly or violently effervescent.
C and Ck horizons (when present) - Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 through 6 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Texture: Stratified loam, silt loam, very fine sandy loam, fine sandy loam, or sandy loam, but is dominantly very fine sandy loam.
Structure: Platy structure or it is massive.
Consistence: Slightly hard or hard, dry; very friable or friable, moist; nonsticky or slightly sticky, wet.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline to very strongly alkaline commonly decreasing with depth.
Effervescent: Strongly effervescent or violently effervescent.
Cqy and Cqk horizons (when present) - Value 6 or 7 dry, 4 through 6 moist;
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Texture: Very fine sandy loam or fine sandy loam.
Consistence : Nonsticky or slightly sticky, wet.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline to very strongly alkaline.
Other features: 20 to 70 percent durinodes.
2C horizon:(when present) Some pedons have stratified sand and gravel at depths below 40 inches.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Caphor(NV), Coldent(NV), Hardhat(NV), Shuttle(NV) and Valmy(NV) series. Caphor soils have horizons of strong discontinuous silica cementation. Coldent soils average 4 to 10 percent clay in the control section and have soil temperature of 53 to 57 degrees F. Hardhat soils contain 5 to 20 percent rock fragments (mainly pebbles) in the control section. Shuttle soils also contain 5 to 20 percent mainly pebbles in the control section and 10 to 25 percent calcium carbonates equivalent. Valmy soils have moderately rapid permeability and have dominantly fine sandy loam, or sandy loam in their particle-size control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bubus soils are on alluvial flats, inset fans, alluvial plains, fan skirts, stream terraces, lakeplain terraces, alluvial flat remnants and basin floor remnants. These soils formed in mixed alluvium of mostly volcanic origin, high in pyroclastic materials. Slopes are 0 to 8 percent. Elevations are 4,000 to 6,800 feet. The climate is cool, semiarid with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 6 to 8 inches; mean annual temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F, and the frost-free season is 100 to 120 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Batan, Landco, Reese, Relley, and Wholan soils. Batan soils have fine-silty particle-size control sections. Landco soils are coarse-silty over clayey particle- size control sections and lack a Cq horizon. Reese soils have fine-loamy particle-size control sections and have a weakly silica-cemented Cq horizon. Relley soils have fine-silty particle-size control sections and a cambic horizon. Wholan soils have coarse-silty particle-size control sections and a cambic horizon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; ponded to medium runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly black greasewood, shadscale, bud sagebrush, rubber rabbitbrush, seepweed, mustard, cheatgrass, and basin wildrye.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central and central Nevada. These soils are moderately extensive. MLRA 24, 28B.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Reno, Nevada
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Lander County, Northern Part, Nevada, 1974.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Duric horizon - The zone from about 15 to 60 inches (Cqy1 and Cqy2 horizons).
Particle-size control sections - The zone from 10 to 40 inches (C2 and Cqy1 horizons and part of the Cqy2 horizon).
