BOCOX SERIES

The Bocox series consists of very deep, poorly drained, moderately permeable soils on upland terraces. These level to very gently sloping soils formed in loamy alluvium or aeolian sediments of Pleistocene age. These soils occur on depressional areas on uplands of the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Depth to a water table ranges from +1.0 to 1.5 feet from October to June. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual air temperature is 61 degrees F. and mean annual precipitation is 33 inches.

TYPE LOCATION: Logan County, Oklahoma; 3.35 miles west and 0.75 miles north of Crescent; 500 feet west and 1900 feet south of the northeast corner of Sec. 7, T. 17 N., R. 4 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness is greater than 60 inches. Depth to water table ranges from +1.0 to 1.5 feet from October to June.
The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 1 to 4. Mottles are in shades of brown. Texture is loamy fine sand or fine sandy loam. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to slightly alkaline.
The E horizons have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 3 to 6. Mottles are in shades of brown. Texture is loamy fine sand. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline. Some pedons may not have more than one E horizon.
The Btl horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 to 6. Redox concentrations and depletions are in shades of brown or gray. Texture is fine sandy loam or sandy clay loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline.
The Bt2 and Bt3 horizons are varigated and have redox concentrations and depletions with hues of 5YR to 10YR, values of 5 to 8, and chromas of 1 to 6 with chromas of less than 2 present in each horizon. Texture is fine sandy loam or sandy clay loam. Reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline. Some pedons will not have Bt2 or Bt3 horizons.
Some pedons have Bt4 or BC horizons that are similar to the Bt2 or Bt3 horizons.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series within MLRA 80A. Soils in similar families are Dougherty and Meno. Doughtery soils do not have wetness features within 30 inches of the surface. Meno soils are in a different moisture regime.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bocox soils are level to very gently sloping depressions on upland terraces of the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). They formed in loamy alluvium or aeolian sediments of Pleistocene age. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean Annual Precipitation: 26 to 40 inches. Mean Annual Temperature: 58 to 64 degress F. Thornthwaite Annual P-E indices: 44 to 64. Frost Free Days: 200 to 220. Elevation ranges from 900 to 1300 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Bathel, Derby, Dougherty, Konawa, and Navina Series. Bathel soils are less and have sandy surface textures less than 20 inches thick. Derby, Dougherty, Konawa, and Navina soils lack wetness features within 30 inches of the soil surface. Derby soils are on dunes. Dougherty and Konawa soils are on slightly higher areas. Navina soils have a mollic epipedon and are on slightly higher areas.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; negligible runoff; moderately permeable. These soils have endosaturation between depths of +1.0 and 1.5 feet from October to June. These soils are frequently ponded to a depth of 1 foot for long durations, and exhibits redox features associated with episaturation.
USE AND VEGETATION: The principle use is for rangeland. The main native species are sand bluestem, little bluestem, and switchgrass. Common introduced species are bermudagrass and weeping lovegrass. Common invaders are smartweed, sedges, and cattails.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Prairies of Oklahoma and possibly Kansas and Texas. The series is of small extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Logan County, Oklahoma;1994.
REMARKS: These soils were formerly mapped as Dougherty and
Vanoss.
Diagnostic horizons and features associated with this pedon are:
OCHRIC EPIPEDON - the zone from the soil surface to a depth of 11 inches (the A horizon).
ALBIC HORIZON - the zone from 11 inches to a depth of 33 inches (the E horizons).
ARGILLIC HORIZON - the zone from 33 inches to a depth of 80 inches (the Bt horizons).
