TYPE LOCATION: Fremont County, Wyoming; approximately 1,190 feet south and 1,980 feet west of the NE corner of sec. 14, T. 4 N., R. 3 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The soils are typically calcareous throughout but may be leached a few inches in some pedons. The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 50 degrees F. The control section is fine sandy loam or sandy loam and has 5 to 18 percent clay. Rock fragments less than three inches in diameter range from 0 to 15 percent.
The A horizon has hue of 5Y through 10YR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 3 through 5 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. This horizon is slightly or moderately alkaline.
The C horizon has hue of 5Y through 10YR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 4 through 6 moist, and chroma of 2 through 4. It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. This horizon is moderately or strongly alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Fang, Fruitland, Ganaflan, Geer, Jeddito, Jenrid, Kumiva, Mazuma, Moepitz, Piltdown, Shotnick, Sodaspring, Tooele, Vanderhoff, Wentridge, and Worland series. Geer soils have volcanic ash, glass, or pyroclastic material. Fang, Fruitland, Ganaflan, Geer, Mazuma, and Sodaspring soils have a mean annual soil temperature greater than 50 degrees F. Jeddito soils are somewhat excessively drained and are mostly redder. Jenrid soils have hue of 7.5YR throughout. Kumiva and Mazuma soils have horizons of secondary carbonate accumulation. Moepitz soils have hue of 5YR and a lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches. Piltdown soils have strata of very fine sandy loam. Shotnick soils are mostly redder. Tooele soils have exchangable sodium percent of more than 15 in the particle-size control section. Vanderhoff, Wentridge, and Worland soils have a paralithic contact at a depth of 20 to 40 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Apron soils are on alluvial fans, toeslopes, and valley bottoms. Slopes are 0 to 10 percent. The soils formed in moderately coarse textured alluvium from calcareous sandstone interbedded with shale. Elevation is 3,800 to 6,300 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 5 to 9 inches. The mean annual temperature is 44 to 48 degrees F. The frost-free season is 110 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lostwells and Oceanet soils and the competing Worland soils. Lostwells soils are fine-loamy. Oceanet soils have a paralithic contact at depths of less than 20 inches.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for irrigated crops, range, and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is yucca, needleandthread, Indian ricegrass, big sagebrush, cactus, and blue grama.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central Wyoming. The soils are moderately extensive.
